News, facts, and stories are spread daily through word of mouth, newspaper, and tv, but where are those sources coming from? And how reliable are they? Should we trust them? It has come to the point that news travels so fast and from so many places that what we hear can never be taken seriously - or rather should not be. Some opt to believing what they hear since they don’t have the time or the resources to fact check the stories, however, you should always be aware of the falsehood of many sources. Bias news stations like Fox News, and targeted participants for a survey or study should all be taken with a grain of salt. Ask yourself - who did this study, how was it done, and who participated in it?

Christmas is around the corner, and with Christmas comes decorations, Christmas parties and most of all; gifts. Unfortunately for those with a lot of friends but not a lot of money, gifts are seen as mandatory sometimes. There are, however, ways to save a buck, which is especially important during the holidays.

One way is to buy after Christmas. This may sound odd, but after the holiday, all of the extra stock that did not sell will be on sale at your local store. Stocking up on decorations, Christmas wrappings, bags, and possibly gifts is a great way to save. Another is to go to the source, buy direct and not through retailers. This may pertain more to you and your family however. Buying electronics from suppliers, like Dell, might save you money. Or if your children need new glasses, zennioptical sells eyeglasses for quite cheap at a reasonable quality which is especially good for the price, comparing it to those that normally sell at $200. Since kids are accident prone, get a few spares, and a few for yourself as well. They take prescription glasses from $8!
Buying in bulk will also save you a bit - but make sure what you are bulk buying is something you actually need a lot of - like toilet paper or socks (you can never have too many socks).

All in all, do what you can for that extra bit of savings. With the economy down and the holidays here, we’ll need every bit. Sometimes you are just saving a few dollars from buying bulk, or a few hundred from buying cheap eyewear. But ever dollar counts!

The Election day and Proposition 8

It is perhaps due to the election coming up soon that people in California felt the need to propose Proposition 8. What is it on? Gay rights for marriage. Why now, after many failed attempts? The constant re-emerging of topics on gay rights and opposition seen in the general public is sending a bad message. There is a lot riding on this election - whether or not the right or left wing will rule the country. I imagine with another Bush, we will see gay rights diminish further, and the war ongoing as usual. Why proposition 8, and why now? This may effects the election, and perhaps even if they do lose, it will raise enough hate in people for a stronger vote on McCain. I surely hope not.

It may not seem relevant. Yes, physics is all about equations and theories. But do we look back on the history? Do we review the past mistakes, the faults of old theories and big thinkers of the time? For historians, perhaps. But for those studying physics, it may seem of no importance. But maybe you should look back and give it another chance. It is, after all, what lead to what we know today. Often knowing the history will give us a richer understanding of the theories, how they were developed, what they were thinking at th time, and how they took it and what applications sprung from it afterwards.
